GREECE. Athens. Third National Greek Olympic Games Medal Struck in Gold, 1875. PCGS SP-63 Secure Holder.
Gad-2. Class B (2nd Class). Struck to commemorate the 1875 Olympic games in Athens, the third that were sponsored by the millionaire Evangelis Zappas. Head facing right, legend around; Reverse: Four line inscription, legend and wreath around. Barre (1818-1878), engraver. Edge engraved with bee, followed by letters OR. Sharply struck fully rendering the bold high relief with a nice contrast to the mirrored fields. No marks to distract from this simple elegant design. A rare and interesting reminder of these early efforts to revive the Olympic Games in their global splendor. PCGS SP-63 Secure Holder.
