ITALY. Genoa. Genovino, ND. Simone Boccanegra (1339-44 and 1356-63). NGC MS-66.
Fr-354; MIR-28. The genovino was the equivalent of the Venetian Ducat and the Florentine Florin but is much scarcer today. It was first issued in the thirteenth century but Simone Boccanegra, the subject of Verdi's opera, was the first doge to mark the coinage with his name. Essentially pristine, this example is well struck and sparkles with intense luster. Slightly better centering might have resulted in an even higher grade for the medieval masterpiece. NGC MS-66.
Estimate: $2600.00- $3000.00
