ITALY. Parma. 2 Lire, 1815. Milan Mint. PCGS MS-64 PL Secure Holder.
C-29; Gig-8; Mont-118. Minted for Maria Luiga d'Austriche, wife of Napoleon, along with a 10 Soldi, Lira, 5 Lire, 20 Lire (gold) and 40 Lire (gold), of which this is the scarcest of the silver denominations. Sensational quality, and perhaps the finest surviving example, with pinpoint detail throughout the design and stunning glass-like smoothness in the fields that is layered with a unique arrangement of multicolored orange, russet and blue tone over both sides. A tiny as-made flan inclusion appears on the edge at 6 o'clock and upon normal viewing, is only seen at two points on the far rim. Even with this imperfection, in our opinion, and that of widely respected numismatist Jim Elmen, this is not simply a prooflike strike as designated by PCGS, but an EXTREMELY RARE proof presentation piece of the issue. While this classification is not absolute (mint records are not available to the numismatic community at large and if they exist, it's unlikely they would have recorded information to this level of specificity), compelling anecdotal evidence exists in the numismatic classification of other issues from the Milan Mint during this period as proofs. Whatever the case, it makes this beauty no less captivating in hand, as it's truly a pleasure to behold. A perfect fit for an advanced collection of Italian coins or issues of the Napoleonic era. PCGS MS-64 PL Secure Holder.

Estimate: $2500.00- $3500.00
