ITALY. Sicily. Oncia, 1734. Charles III (1720-34). NGC MS-66.
Fr-885; KM-135; Mont-3. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the French candidate (Philip V) and Austrian candidate (Charles III) contested the throne of Spain. By the Treaty of Utrecht in 1714, Philip won Spain and the American colonies while Charles received Belgium and the Spanish holdings in Italy, including Naples. The duke of Savoy was bought off with Sicily, which he ruled 1714-20. He swapped Sicily to Austria in 1720 for Sardinia and this oncia was issued in Palermo during the Austrian occupation. This example, although crudely produced and displaying a number of die breaks in the obverse fields, boasts frosty luster and no marks or dings. Tied for the finest graded of the type at NGC. NGC MS-66.
Estimate: $1800.00- $2400.00
