MALTA. 4 Tari, (1557-68). NGC MS-62.
RS p. 46, #44var, Schembri p. 44, var. Jean de la Vallete, head of St. John on a circular platter. The image of his decapitated head refers to the story of Salome, the step-daughter of Herod Antipas, sub-king of Galilee. She pleased King Herod so much with her dancing that he promised to give her anything she desired. She is said to have declared "Bring me the head of John the Baptist on a platter". True to his word, John was then executed. Among the finest examples seen (and the single finest certified!), this example retains excellent luster and possesses light tone over both sides. An incredible strike has left all the detailed within John's wavy hair fully defined. A die crack at 11 o'clock that extends to nearly touch John's beard should serve as a useful pedigree marker. NGC MS-62.

Estimate: $1500.00- $2000.00
