MEXICO. Durango. Cuencame. "Muera Huerta" Peso, 1914. NGC FINE-15.
GB-unlisted; KM-unlisted; Gaytan-DGO8b (this coin). EXCESSIVELY RARE. Wholesome for the assigned grade with no major defects and evenly circulated surfaces. The present example's unmistakable crisscross patterned edge design is similar to the one found on some examples of the very rare pattern type struck in copper (GB-81) while the obverse (date side) die is a reworked, slightly refined version of the also very rare "mule" type struck in silver (GB-85) with the date "1914" being the clearest tell-tale characteristic. It is thus quite logical to conclude that the present coin, albeit obviously well-circulated, constitutes a pattern or an extremely limited issue that should be chronologically placed after the aforementioned "mule" type and before the regular Muera Huerta issue (GB-87). A most important coin for the specialist of this popular and challenging series with the added allure of a legendary pedigree. NGC FINE-15.

Ex: Garcia (H. Christensen 12/1980, lot 662).

Ex: Cortina and the plate coin in Gaytan as well as in the reference work "El arte de la platería Mexicana, 500 anos".

Estimate: $8000.00- $12000.00
