29.08 gms. Delm-165; VanGel-36a; Mailiet-pl.83#2. Uniface. Under the control of the Spanish, the siege of Middelburg lasted between 1572-74 during the eighty-years war. With supplies running low the Spanish surrendered on February 18, 1574, after news reached the city that their reinforcements had been defeated at the battle of Scheldt, January 29, 1574. The terms of the surrender allowed what remained of the Spanish garrison and the clergy to flee the city without harm. Bold stamps, attractive slate gray toning. PCGS AU-50 Secure Holder.
