URUGUAY. Peso, 1844. NGC MS-61.
KM-5; El-2. Coin axis alignment. Mintage of only 1,500 pieces. This issue was produced over a two day period in February of 1844 and celebrated the reopening of the Casa de Moneda in Montevideo, after the siege of the city by General Manuel Oribo during the Uruguayan Civil War. The conflict lasted nearly a decade and included overt European meddling which helped transform it into an international war. Even Giuseppe Garibaldi who would later go on to unite Italy (1861) had a hand in the conflict. Of unsurpassed historical significance and in remarkably well preserved condition, there are few other South American coins with such a compelling story to tell as the coin offered here. Sharply struck with clean fields which possess significant reflective flash and attractive scattered toning. Light adjustment marks, as are common on the issue, blend into both sides. NGC MS-61.

Estimate: $1800.00- $2400.00
