Republica Argentina. 20 Pesos Fuertes, ND (186x). P-UNL, BA-99r. Remainder. PMG Extremely Fine 40.
With the run on the Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Ayres in 1865, the government decided to issue interest-bearing custom notes that were used successfully in the Confederacion Argentina from 1855 to 1861. It was decided to issue the notes with Republica Argentina rather than the bank name similar to the last issue of the Confederacion to make them more acceptable to the public. However, the public refused to accept them believing that they had no real backing and that the interest would not be paid. The notes were withdrawn and destroyed. Only two examples of these notes are known - an issued note and a remainder. It is not known if other denominations were issued. These are the first notes with the title Republica Argentina to be issued by the unified country.
