British Coins, Victoria, sovereign, 1879, young head l., WW buried in narrow truncation, horse with long tail, small BP, rev. St. George and the dragon (S.3856A; Marsh 90 [R3 in any condition]), an attractive specimen retaining much lustre, sharply struck, with no major marks but a lot of tiny abrasions, mainly on the obverse, reflective of light commercial use and consistent with the technical grade, certified and graded by PCGS as About Uncirculated 55, extremely rare in this grade - only one other graded AU55 by PCGS - and the only rare date of the long tail type
Mintage was scant this year for this variety from London, at a mere 20,013 sovereigns. Most of those doubtless perished not just from use but also in the great melt of 1930-31.
