Hungary/Romania: Kolozsvár (Cluj) Jewish community 'Shechita' clipped 36 Fillér tax token, struck in brass, (ND) circa. 1900; not maker-marked; size: 24mm; weight: 3.45g. Obverse: Hebrewith Yiddish word "Gabela"; Hung. legend above: "ORTH[ODOX] IZR. [AELITA] HITKÖZSÉG | Kolozsvár" (Orthodox Jewish Community of Kolozsvár [Cluj]). On reverse: "36". 'Gabela' was an indirect tax on the Kosher slaughter of chickens and cattle, imposed in the areas of Romania & Bulgaria. The income financed the activities, services and charities of the Jewish community. In UNC; Schaffer CLU-23 gives it highest rarity rating (1-5 pieces known).
