Britain: Jewish 'Pidyon HaBen' silver coin (ND), 1955; designed by Vivian Cohen, produced by Kenning & Spencer of London; size: 35mm; weight: 21.05g. Obverse: pair of hands delivering the Kohen's blessing; blessing's text in Hebrew around. Reverse: text of the Biblical commandment to redeem a first-born son "Every Male Firstborn Shall You Redeem | In the Value of Five Shekels | [This Coin is] One Silver Shekel". Jewish law ('Halakha') requires that the coins used for redeeming the newborn contain the requisite amount of silver as the original Holy Shekel ('Shekel HaKodesh') is belived to have contained - between 100-117g. Cohen was a London-based antique coin dealer and appears to have been Jewish.
