Spain > Madrid: Madrid & Toledo Synagogues commemoration, 1968; struck in tombak; not maker-marked; 45mm; 35.9g. Obverse: coat of arms of Castile & León autonomous region with Spanish legend around "Aun Suenan Los Rezos de Aquellos Hermanos Que en Tiempos Pasados Pisaban tus Piedras" & "Toledo [1357 in Roman numerals] Sinagoga" in exergue. Reverse: torch + Hebrew legend "Netzakh Israel Lo Yishaker" (The Destiny of the People of Israel will not Lie) & dedication in center, "Holy Congregation of Madrid | Dedication of Synagogue | Hanukka 5729". In same year Franco government repealed 1492 decree of expulsion of Spanish Jews; in 1967 government passed "Religious Freedom Law" enabling the Madrid Jewish community to establish new "Beit Yaakov" Synagogue (probably one commemorated by this medal).
