Rome: unidentified coin with 2-line legend COLON FELIX on obverse and OS|TIA (on 2 lines) on reverse; size: 19 x 20.25mm; weight: 2.8g. Ostia was the harbour city of ancient Rome, and may have been Rome's first 'colonia' (a Roman outpost established in conquered territory to secure it although the term came to denote the highest status of Roman city - possibly the intention of the legend on this coin). Translated from Latin "Colon Felix" may mean "Happy/Forunate Colony". Bearing semblance to early Christian/Byzantine coins & lacking standard Roman coin designs, this coin may date to the period when Ostia was an episcopal see (jurisdiction of a Bishop) from the early 3rd Century (St. Augustine's mother, St. Monica, was buried here in 387 CE), coinciding with the High Empire period (27 BCE – 305 CE) when the locale became a retreat for rich aristicrats, earning the name "Rome's seaside luxury resort" by archeologists. Of Jewish interest: the locale is home to "Ostia Synagogue" - one of the oldest Synagogues in the world and the oldest Synagogue in Europe, dating to the reign of Claudius (41-54 CE); it was in use as a Synagogue into the 5th century CE.
