France: Grand Sanhedrin medal (restrike, 1880-1950), 1806; in bronze; obverse design by Alexis Joseph DePaulis, reverse by Augustin Dupré; size: 41.5mm, weight: 36.75g. Obverse: 'mature' Napoleon in uniform facing right with Fr. legend "Napoleon Emp. et Roi." ("Napoleon Emperor and King"); DuPaulis's & mint director Dominique Vivant Denon's names below. Reverse: Moses bowing before robed Napoleon who is bearing the Ten Commandments & legend "Grand Sanhedrin XXX. Mai MDCCCVI". Medallic strike; "bronze" & cornucopia on rim. Commemorates Napoleon's convening of "Sanhedrin" council, the first in 1500+ years, and reaching agreement whereby Jews fighting in the French armies would be relieved of their Kosher restrictions in exchange for religious freedom and state protection in the French empire, enabling him to draft Jews into his armies.
