Germany: Deggendorf Church Host Desecration 500th Anniversary pewter medal, 1837; medallist signed (not discernable); size: 43.5mm; weight: 18.4g. Obverse German legend: "ZUR / ERINNERUNG / DES 500 JÅHRIGEN / JUBILAEUM / IN DER HEIL GRAB / KIRCHE / DEGGENDORF / 1837". Reverse: image of Church altar & devices, medallist's name in exergue; German leg: "GRAB CHRISTI DEGGENDORF FILIAL KIRCHE HEIL *". Commemorates 1338 attack & slaughter of Jewish quarter by locals based on false allegation; Duke Henry in Landshut praised the act, absolved the perpetrators & permitted them to keep looted posessions. The now enriched community, in 1360 consecrated a new large Church on the site of the destroyed Synagogue, and in 1361 began a tradition called the "Deggendorf Gnade", a mass annual pilgramage to mark the supposed Jewish desecration of the Host, which continued until abolished in 1992. In AU-UNC; ref: Kirschner-3.
