Original Jewish WWII/Holocaust-era art: "The End of Bismarck" (the sinking of the battleship) water-color on postcard, signed by J. Sohn; 14 x 8.9cm, framed by paper mat, signed and titled by the artist. The artist was Jakob Sohn, a professor of mathematics & physics, originally from Würzburg and later from Nuremberg; dismissed during the Third Reich for being Jewish, he moved to Leipzig where he assisted with Jewish education; emigrated to Britain in 1939. He painted as a hobby. The event depicted here ocurred on 27 May 1941: after being severely damaged by British torpedo planes and warships the Bismarck was scuttled. Note the scratch over the ship's naval flag where the Swastika would have appeared. This event was closely watched by German-Jewish emigres in the UK, who rejoiced for the country that had taken them in over the one that had kicked them out.
