Original Jewish WWII/Holocaust-era art: "Seder" ink on coarse artists' paper, signed J.S.; 10.2 x 15.1cm, pasted onto thin cardboard mat, initialled/dated (J.S. 5701 [1941]) and titled by the artist. The artist was Jakob Sohn, a professor of mathematics & physics, originally from Würzburg and later from Nuremberg; dismissed during the Third Reich for being Jewish, he moved to Leipzig where he assisted with Jewish education; emigrated to Britain in 1939. He painted as a hobby. Sohn's style was to incorporate several images into a single picture: here seen the Passover "Hagadah", a traditional round tiered Seder plate & covered Matzos, the traditional 4 cups of wine + a 5th for Eliyahu HaNavi - all in foreground on a table with blossoming tree devices in the corners (symbolizing Spring - the time of Redemption), with the Passover story of Jewish enslavement in Egypt in the background & Moshe Rabeinu at left holding a staff.
