Rabbinic names & signatures on 'Etz Haim' Yeshiva handout documents: Adar 1940 dated Yeshiva check made out for 20 Lira (Pounds) to Rabbi Leib 'Bahart' (whose acronym may mean Ben (son of) HaRav Tukachinsky - the Rosh Yeshiva), "to distribute to the students of the Yeshiva who distinguish themselves over time" - members of the Yeshiva community subsisted on a meager monthly handout, here based on study performance. On back of check a list of 21 names and the amounts alloted each: their signatures also appear on any of 22 chits confirming their receipt of the monies, and the names include Rabbi Shmuel Homminer/Hominer (the legendary Eved Hamelech whose house would swarm with people requesting a blessing); Rabbi Shmuel Tefilinsky/Tfilinski, son of the famous Rabbi Nesanel Sofer, a famous Tzaddik in his own right; Rabbi Shmuel Shapira (zt"l), closest pupil of Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer and a prominent leader of the Breslov, known as "tzadik of Jerusalem" (When he became a Breslover, Rav Meltzer was reportedly furious with the person who convinced him to join, saying "he will never leave Gehinom"); Rabbi Shalom Eisen, a well-known Rav in Jerusalem, and Rav Yehoshua Brim, Rosh Yeshiva of Boyan Chasiduth - among other prominent Rabbanim. Of philatelic interest, the deposit free (here 7m and not the standard 10m - perhaps a different rate period) was paid using a standard Mandate pictorals frank and not the customary Revenue frank.
