This unit is presently the 3rd Battalion of the 1st (Golani) brigade, originally formed in 1948 during the War of Independence and led by Avraham Yafe; named after the Biblical era Judge, Gideon Ben Yoash, as a result of the unit's assignment to the Jezreel Valley, Gideon's home region.
