Ancients
SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I (ca. 405-400 BC). AE hemilitron (26mm, 4.89 gm, 4h). NGC XF★ 3/5 - 4/5. Head of Arethusa left; laurel branch behind / Dolphin right; cockle shell below, ΣVPA between. CNS 24. SNG ANS 417. HGC 2, 1480. A unique example with part of the neighboring flan still attached from casting. Even more amazing, the coin was struck this way before trimming and was not trimmed after striking. It's very hard to believe that this coin saw circulation, it seems more likely that it was destined to be trimmed or melted and re-struck and somehow was lost before that process took place.
