Numa Pompilius was the second king of Rome and according to tradition had a son by the name of Calpus, from whom the gens Calpurnia was descended and derived its name, thus the link to the proquaestor who struck this issue. The prow on the reverse commemorates Pompey's famous victories over the Cilician pirates in 67/6 BC.
