Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AV aureus (20mm, 7.79 gm, 4h). NGC XF 5/5 -2/5, bent, edge filing. Lugdunum, 11-10 BC. AVGVSTVS-DIVI • F, laureate head of Augustus right / IMP-• XII, Apollo Citharoedus of Actium, wearing long drapery, standing right, plectrum in right hand, lyre in left; ACT below. RIC I 192a corr. (ACT in exergue). Lyon 59. Calicó 229. Slight bend in flan and circulation marks consistent with the grade, but overall a choice and handsome example of this rare issue.
This very rare coin commemorates the victory of Augustus at Actium. The reverse probably depicts the main Apollo statue in the temple of Apollo Actius, dedicated in 28 BC.
