Vespasian (AD 69-79). AE sestertius (32mm, 25.59 gm, 6h). Choice VF, smoothing. Rome, AD 71. IMP CAES VESPAS AVG P M TR P P P COS III, laureate head of Vespasian right / IVDAEA-CAPTA, palm tree in center; bearded Jew (on left) standing right, his hands tied behind his back, grounded shield behind, Judaea (on right) seated right on cuirass in attitude of mourning, resting left elbow on knee and supporting head with her left hand, grounded shield before; S C in exergue. RIC II, Part 1, 233. Hendin 1509. Glossy brass surfaces with coffee toning, lightly smoothed in fields. With a powerful imperial portrait and an evocative reverse "celebrating" the subjugation of Judaea.

This magnificent Judaea Capta sestertius is part of the propaganda campaign touting Vespasian's victory in the Jewish War. The figure of Judaea is shown in an attitude of mourning, while a captive Jewish warrior behind stands with his hands bound behind his back, destined from slavery or death in the Roman arena. Such images, while supremely brutal to modern eyes, were to the Romans justified and indeed glorious, the rebellious Jews having broken faith with their overlords and killed tens of thousands of Roman soldiers and civilians. The IVDAEA CAPTA propaganda helped consolidate Vespasian's hold on power in the wake of the disastrous civil wars of AD 69.
