Faustina Jr., wife of Marcus Aurelius (Augusta, AD 147-175/6). AR denarius (18mm, 3.48 gm, 12h). NGC Gem MS 5/5 - 5/5. Rome, AD 161-175. FAVSTINA-AVGVSTA, draped bust of Faustina Junior right, seen from front, hair brushed back in straight lines overlayed with three in parallel waves, all bound in chignon at base of head / VENVS G-ENETRIX, Venus Genetrix standing facing, head left, holding small Victory (?) in right hand and resting left hand on shield decorated with figures of the Dioscuri, resting on helmet. RIC III (Marcus Aurelius) 734. RSC 280. Deeply struck from dies of excellent style on bright flan with cartwheel luster.
The figure of Venus Genetrix ("Venus the Universal Mother") on the reverse is highly unusual in that the goddess's attributes are more associated with her military guise, Venus Victrix.
