Pescennius Niger, usurper in the East (AD 193-194). AR denarius (17mm, 3.03 gm, 6h). NGC VF 4/5 - 3/5. Antioch or Caesarea, Cappadocia, AD 193-194. IMP CAES C PE-SC NIGER AVG, laureate head of Pescennius Niger right / FORT-V-NAE RE, Fortuna enthroned left, rudder in right hand, cradling cornucopia on left arm. RIC -, cf RIC IV, Part I, 20 for reverse legend. Very rare! Nice clear detail and a type seldom seen at auction. The only entry in RIC for this reverse legend is RIC 20, however that coin has IVST in the obverse legend and the type is with Fortuna holding patera and wreath. RIC 23 has this reverse type with rudder and cornucopia, but with obverse legend including IVSTI and reverse as RED.
