Victoria gold "Shield"  Sovereign 1879-S MS63 NGC, Sydney mint, KM6, S-3855, McD-126a. Shield variety, C/O in VICTORIA (unlisted on the holder). Quite possibly among the finest extant of this extremely rare variety, and presently the single-finest certified specimen. PCGS has certified only 7 of this type, the highest graded being 3 at the MS61 level, whilst NGC has not listed any in their database (although the present specimen proves they have in fact encountered this variety before). This elite example clearly shows the C/O error, also exhibiting the same die crack running from the border as seen on the MS61 example of this variety we offered in January of this year. Two points above the next highest certified, this wonderful MS63 example boasts a full coverage of shimmering yellow-white luster, the strike immensely bold giving immaculate detail to Victoria's young portrait and the reverse shield. The rarity, eye appeal and 'finest-known' status of this piece leads us to believe it will inspire fierce competition amongst dedicated Australian and Sovereign collectors alike--but only one may add it to their collection when bidding finishes.
