Pedro I gold 6400 Reis 1825-R AU55 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM370.1, Russo-600. From a mintage of just 776 pieces, this outstanding rarity of the Brazilian series represents a major change to the numismatic iconography of the time. Whereas Pedro is depicted on his 1822 coronation medal as Roman Emperor, he ordered changes to the designs of the coins immediately afterwards and henceforth he was depicted in full military regalia as he is seen on this premium specimen. Its historical and numismatic attributes notwithstanding, this piece also carries extraordinary visual appeal, having been sharply struck giving depth to every aspect of the Emperor's military dress; the planchet is bright and sunny, with a great deal of reflectivity to engage the viewer's eye. A fantastic treasure, rarely encountered as nice as this specimen and sure to elicit strong bidding amongst specialized collectors of the Brazilian numismatic series.
