Republic 1/4 Real 1842 QUITO-MV AU Details (Attempted Piercing) NGC, Quito mint, KM26. One of the greatest rarities of the Ecuadorian numismatic series. The rarity of this denomination for 1842 is explained by its production only beginning in September of that year, leaving little time for large numbers to be minted. Supposedly one of just 6 or 7 known, and certainly one of the finest; in the last 15 years, only 4 other specimens have been offered for sale; one Specimen graded SP66, one VF Details, one Fine Details and a raw example which looks to also be VF Details. Accordingly, this present offering is especially elite with its only detraction a small attempted piercing on the reverse, in all other regards exceptional, sharply detailed and appearing especially bright and silver considering it is only of 0.333 fineness. Missing from nearly all collections of Latin American coinage, the opportunity to obtain this 1/4 Real should not be passed up.
