Edward III (1327-77) gold Noble (Treaty Period, 1361-69) UNC Details (Edge Filing) NGC, London mint, 7.63g, S-1502, N-1222var (legends). (Saltire) ЄD | WARD (colon of stacked x's) DЄI (colon of stacked x's) GRA (colon of stacked x's) RЄX (colon of stacked x's) ANL (colon of stacked x's) DnS (colon of stacked x's) hyB (colon of stacked x's) AQ | T, half-length figure of King standing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left; mast extending into legend / +Ih'C (colon of stacked x's) AVTЄM (colon of stacked x's) TRANSIЄNS (colon of stacked x's) PЄR (colon of stacked x's) MЄDIV (colon of stacked x's) ILLORVM (colon of stacked x's) IBAT, Floriate cross with Є in center. An absolutely pristine example of this highly desirable short-lived type produced after the Treaty Brétigny in 1360 when Edward III renounced his claim to the French throne. The fields are clean and luminous, having taken on an lemon-gold hue, while the razor-sharp legends are fully legible and completely on-flan. Despite the details grade, "edge filing" likely occurred at the mint to correct the weight of the flan and does absolutely nothing to impinge on the legends of an otherwise Mint State coin.
