James I (1603-25) gold Laurel (1621-23) XF Details (Removed from Jewelry) NGC, Tower mint, 8.72g, Third Coinage, S-2638A, N-2113. Thistle mm. IACOBVS D: G: MAG: BRI: FRAN: ET: HIB: REX •, third laureate bust of James I right, XX (denomination) behind / FACIAM - EOS IN - GENTEM - VNVM, crowned royal shield with long cross dividing the flan into four quadrants. A handsome example of this classically crude issue, with some mushiness to the legends--which appear almost entirely on the flan--noticeable, but not to the point of preventing legibility. Some very slight traces of a mount appear between 12 and 6 o'clock, but are extremely unobtrusive and do little to detract from what is overall a highly appealing coin, with the majority of the details of James' portrait, most particularly the features of his face, still highly distinguishable.
