Great Britain
James I (1603-25) gold Laurel ND (1624) XF45 NGC, Tower mint, 8.81g, Third Coinage, S-2638B, N-2114. Trefoil mm. IACOBVS D: G: MAG: BRI: FRAN: ET: HIB: REX •, fourth laureate bust of James I right, XX (denomination) behind / FACIAM - EOS IN - GENTEM - VNVM, crowned royal shield with long cross dividing the flan into four quadrants. A brilliantly struck example for the grade with notably sharp legends, despite clear evidence of double-striking on the reverse, and a remarkable degree of detail left to James' portrait. While the execution of the reverse shield appears largely muddled, it is noteworthy that the fields on both obverse and reverse alike are almost free of signs of handling or serious blemishes. A worthy example deserving of a place of prestige in any collection of hammered English gold.
