James II gold 5 Guineas 1688 VF35 NGC, KM460.1, S-3397A. The highest English gold denomination issued during the short reign of James II, the last Roman Catholic monarch of England. Slightly flat at the highest points commensurate with its grade and bearing contact marks to the reverse, in all other respects this is a superbly attractive example; the entire planchet aglow with subdued luster, and much excellent detail to James's portrait. There is evidence of a light reddish tone forming in the reverse peripheries, only adding to the eye appeal of this large and popular type. 1688 marked the final year of James's coinage before his abdication at the hands of William III, who went on to marry his eldest daughter Mary II. A lovely 5 Guinea piece, sure to catch the eye of a dedicated collector.
