Great Britain
George III copper Proof Pattern Restrike 1/2 Penny 1795 PR65 Brown NGC, P-1041. By W. J. Taylor. An exquisite restrike produced in the 1850s from salvaged Soho mint dies. The design for this pattern is a charming variant of the eventually adopted 'cartwheel' design, with a broad raised rim within which the legend is incuse. The reverse depiction of Britannia, however, is far more sensitively performed than that of the 1797 dated currency issues, and she is shown seated within the cartwheel border itself, a dynamic design choice. The planchet a gleaming chocolate brown color, pristine surfaces and bold details exhibiting little evidence of the 60-year lag between the dies' production and the striking of this Gem proof. A stunning piece, and one whose appearance would be difficult to improve upon.
