Victoria Mint Error - Full Obverse Brockage 1/2 Crown 1843 MS61 NGC, KM740, S-3888. An immense offering: an already particularly rare year of Halfcrown which has defied the odds and been produced as a full obverse brockage, and survived in Mint State preservation to boot. What immediately strikes the viewer is the incuse portrait of Victoria where the reverse would usually be. The Halfcrown which became lodged in the die expanded on striking, meaning that by the time it struck our example, Victoria's visage was far larger and spread out than normal, giving the appearance of an entirely different coin's obverse! Both the brockage reverse and obverse are razor-sharp, handsomely toned a dark gray; we recently offered a regular 1843 Halfcrown in our April 2018 Chicago sale where it realized $3,840, and we can only guess at what price this extreme rarity of the same year will achieve.
