Great Britain
Victoria gold Proof Golden Jubilee Medal 1887 PR62 Cameo NGC, BHM-3219, Eimer-1733a. 82.6gm. Queen Victoria was, by the end of her life, the longest reigning English monarch ever to have sat on the throne, and during her lifetime Britain saw the development and consolidation of her vast Empire. Accordingly, the nation held tremendous pride and adoration for their Queen, and few pieces reflect this sentiment more than the present golden medal produced to mark her 50th year on the throne - her aptly named Golden Jubilee. From a mintage of just 944 pieces, this huge medal debuts Victoria's 'Jubilee' portrait on the obverse, thickly frosted and more worthy of an "Ultra Cameo" designation than "Cameo", whilst the reverse depicts the Queen enthroned amid figures of arts, science, commerce and industry (all which flourished in England during her reign). Rich, aged-gold color dominates the planchet, the fields highly reflective with the seemingly unavoidable hairlines and contact marks this type always exhibits, likely due to their popularity leading to frequent handling and exchanging as gifts. Nevertheless, this piece hardly fails to inspire awe in the viewer through its remarkable engraving and production quality, premium near-choice grade and all-round beauty. A superb, and avidly collected large-size gold medal.
