Islamic Dynasties
Umayyad. temp. Abd al-Malik (AH 65-86 / AD 685-705) gold Dinar AH 78 (AD 697/8) Gem UNC,  No mint (likely Damascus), 4.28g, 20mm, A-125, ICV-156, Bernardi-42. A simply gorgeous example, the calligraphy still highly curvilinear and carefully spaced so that no word or letter feels cramped and is fully legible. A very desirable and somewhat scarcer date, struck just one year after 'Abd al-Malik's momentous monetary reform of AH 77. Though all of these early dinars bear no mint name, it has been widely agreed upon by scholars of the series that they were almost undoubtedly produced at a central palace mint in Damascus, the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate. With light stippling in the fields, one would not presume that this high purity issue subtly undercut the predominance of the Byzantine nomisma, which weighed 0.3g more, through perhaps an unwitting exploitation of Gresham's Law-like principles.
