Islamic Dynasties
Ottoman Empire. Mehmed V Specimen 5 Qirsh AH 1327 Year 5 (1911/12)-H SP66 NGC, Misr mint (in Egypt), KM308. Struck from dies engraved in Birmingham. The first of what appears to be a specially made specimen set offered in this sale, this astonishing piece appears at first to be perfectly silvery in finish, and rapidly reveals a flurry of mottled iridescent tones with especially prominent notes of magenta and coppery-orange as it is rotated in hand. While Mint State examples come highly coveted and can bring in the $500-700 range, specimens of such issues are largely newcomers to the market, undoubtedly positioned to set new records for the type and series as a whole.
