Papal States. Sede Vacante Scudo 1823-B AU53 PCGS, Bologna mint, KM1293, B-3248. A very rare Sede Vacante type to locate in any grade, let alone at this prestigious level--currently the second finest certified by PCGS--this gorgeous crown-sized piece stands as a testament to the beauty of 19th-century Papal coins. Amidst enveloping charcoal gray fields and the elegant portrayal of Mary seated in the clouds holding the keys to heaven and a small chapel the viewer finds flints of honey-golden tone which, like gilding, accentuated every curve and edge of the scene and engrains an all the more celestial ambiance. On the reverse, mottled accents around the devices heighten visual contrast an seem to intensify the perspective of the composition, making all gaze shift to heaven as was certainly its purpose. Die cracks are visible around both the obverse and reverse legends, with slight traces of adjustment marks disappearing subtly into the folds of Mary's robes. A truly spectacular piece to view in hand, worthy of a place of distinction in any collection of world crowns.
