Kingdom of Napoleon. Napoleon I "Completion of Milan Cathedral" gold Specimen Medal 1813 SP64+ PCGS, 55mm, 102.4g. By S. Thomas, struck in 18ct gold. Bearing the Duomo di Milano on the obverse, the reverse engraved: DUOMO DI MILANO / GIOVANNI GALEAZZI VISCONTI / INIZIO NEL 1386 / NAPOLEONE I FECE ULTIMARE LA FACCIATA NEL 1813. A massive golden commemorative, presumably some form of VIP issue, produced to mark the completion of the Milan Cathedral's facade. The Duomo took nearly six centuries to build, only finally complete after Napoleon I ordered the facade finished by Pellicani in 1805, a feat which took seven more years. This medal celebrates the final completion, produced in remarkable high relief and exhibiting a superb engraving of the now-complete Cathedral. Reflective and prooflike, an exquisite piece of Italian architectural history. AGW 2.5077 oz.
