Louis I gold Cob 8 Escudos 1725 L-M AU Details (Bent, Edge Filing) NGC, Lima mint, KM40, Onza-543. One of the most scarce and romantic of the entire Cob series, Louis I was only King for 7 months in 1724 before his death from smallpox, after which his father resumed rule. Accordingly, the 1725-dated Lima issues were all technically posthumous, and represent one of the most popular 8 Escudo varieties for their one-year of production and their historical intrigue. This present specimen is an excellent selection; there is little evidence for the 'edge filing' noted on the holder, and indeed this 8 Escudos is overweight at 27.81g and so likely did not fall victim to clipping. The flan does show a bend, but this hardly impacts the eye appeal. Well-detailed and of a vibrant gold color, this charming Cob is likely to attract significant attention from collectors of the Spanish colonial series.
