James VI (1567-1625) gold Unite ND (1604-9) XF Details (Cleaned) NGC, S-5463. Ninth coinage, Thistle mm. A boldly struck and visually appealing example of this popular Scottish denomination, bearing what is perhaps the least offensive of the 'details' designations; for, in truth, a large percentage of coins this age have encountered cleaning at one point or another, and this example has nearly entirely retoned. Moderately circulated leading to shallow wear across the surfaces, and yet this piece still exhibits excellent detail due to a clearly excellent striking allowing the metal to receive the full design from the dies. Handsomely colored a vivid 'creamy' gold, evidence of russet tone forming in the recesses of the legend; an altogether captivating selection of Scottish gold, destined for a higher-tier cabinet.
