Republic Proof 2-1/2 Shillings 1892 PR65 NGC, KM7. Hern-Z30. Supposedly only 50-60 of these proof rarities were struck, a figure not entirely substantiated by the 73 examples seen by NGC and PCGS combined (some of these, however, are presumably repeats of the same coin). Nonetheless a scarce and ever-popular proof, in a premium Gem level grade only exceeded by a single PR66 and one PR67. Deeply reflective mirror fields have lightly toned giving a misty, golden patina to the surfaces, the devices supremely well-struck and exhibiting no wear whatsoever. An elite South African Proof sure to command a great deal of interest when it crosses the auction block.
