Republic "Montevideo Siege" Peso 1844 AU50 NGC, Montevideo mint, KM5. Coin alignment. One of the more popular Latin-American issues, a one-year type from a mintage of just 1,500 pieces struck at the reopened Casa de Moneda in Montevideo after the long civil war and city siege by General Oribo. Charmingly toned a dove-gray over surfaces of muted luster, well-struck for this somewhat crude issue with minor contact marks and wear in line with the technical grade (of note, a pronounced scratch in the reverse field).
