MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AR tetradrachm (26mm, 17.14 gm, 11h). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 3/5. Early Ptolemaic issue of Memphis (or Alexandria), under Ptolemy I Soter, as satrap, ca. 323/2-317/1 BC. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus enthroned left, right leg drawn back, feet on stool, eagle in right hand, scepter in left; rose in left field, ΔI-O beneath strut and in inner right field. Price 3971. Lustrous surfaces with some scattered darker toning, light graffito in left field on reverse noted for accuracy.
Tetradrachms of Alexander from the mint of Memphis, Egypt are widely regarded as stylistically the most beautiful in the series.
