Ancients
SELEUCID KINGDOM. Antiochus III the Great (222-187 BC). AR tetradrachm (32mm, 16.76 gm, 12h). NGC MS 4/5 - 3/5, brushed. Uncertain Mint 57, in Phrygia, perhaps Synnada (?), ca. from 203 BC. Diademed head of Antiochus III right, somewhat idealized with assertive nose, tightly manicured hair but receding hairline, break in bangs, one diadem tie waving upward, the other falling forward over shoulder, bead-and-reel border / BAΣIΛEΩΣ / ANTI-OXOY, Apollo seated left on omphalus, testing arrow in right hand, left hand on grounded bow right behind with curved tips and grip marked by three widely separated pellets; palm branch (?) in exergue. SC -, cf. SC 1005 for similar portrait. A simply stunning coin in hand. High relief portrait, strongly struck on ample flan with mirror-like surfaces.

This specimen does not appear to precisely match any mint in Seleucid Coins. The portrait is exceptionally fine with the diadem ties executed in a careful and fashionable manner. The hair is expertly coiffured on the obverse and Apollo has a long braid in the form of pellets across the shoulder. The bead-and-reel border is smaller and more well defined than typical and the exergual feature is an oddity in and of itself, as well as the Ω in the reverse legend having a pellet in the center as well as two strong globular terminals. Certainly an enigmatic coin and worth further study and publication.
