L. Marcius Philippus (57/6 BC). AR denarius (17mm, 3.85 gm, 2h). NGC AU★ 5/5 - 5/5. Rome. ANCVS, diademed head of King Ancus Marcius right; lituus behind / PHILIPPVS, equestrian statue prancing right on arcade of five arches, flower (splash of water?) below horse; A-Q-V-A-MAR (MAR ligate) within arches. Crawford 425/1. Sydenham 919. Marcia 28. Realistic portrait accented by deep toning.

The Marcia gens claimed decent from Ancus Marcius, the fourth king of Rome, who is said to have been the first to bring water to Rome by means of an aqueduct. The equestrian statue is of Q. Marcius Rex, who was commissioned by the Senate to repair old aqueducts and build one which would give a supply to the Capitol, while he was praetor in 144 BC. This aqueduct is known as the Aqua Marcia.
