Marc Antony as Triumvir and Imperator (43-31 BC). AR denarius (18mm, 3.88 gm, 4h). NGC VF 4/5 - 4/5. Obverse die signed by 'P.' Athens, ca. 33/2 BC. M. Junius Silanus, quaestor proconsul. ANTON AVG IMP III COS DES III V R P C, bare head of Mark Antony right; in hair below ear, small P / ANTONIVS/AVG IMP III in two lines. Crawford 542/2. HCRI 347. Sydenham 1209. RSC 2. Minor porosity. Nearly extremely fine. The carefully concealed letter "P" behind the ear of Antony's portrait represents the only known example of an artist's signature on a Roman Republican coin. The letter went unnoticed by numismatists for centuries before it was recognized in the early decades of the twentieth century.
