OSTROGOTHS. Theoderic (AD 493-518) in the name of Anastasius I. AR quarter siliqua (11mm, 0.76 gm, 7h). NGC XF 4/5 - 3/5. Ravenna. D N ANASTASIVS AVG (read from outside at lower right), pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Anastasius I right / INVIC-TA ROMA, monogram of Ostrogothic King Theoderic; cross over monogram, star below, S retrograde in monogram. Metlich 44a. cf. MIB I 44a. Superbly engraved and well struck on tight flan. Nice cabinet toning.
Note - the holder erroneously lists the obverse in the name of Justin I.
The Ostrogothic king Theoderic ruled Italy for more than three decades more successfully than any Roman emperor in over a century. Although he ruled with de facto autonomy, he tactfully maintained the fiction that he controlled the West as the agent of the East Roman Emperor, as seen on this rare quarter-siliqua of Rome. The obverse bears the name and titles (and presumably portrait) of the Emperor Anastasius I (AD 419-518), while the reverse has Theoderic's name in monogram form.
