Charles IV gold 8 Escudos 1801 P-JF XF40 NGC, Popayan mint, KM62.2. A pleasing and lustrous representative of the type, with relatively limited wear that remains contained to the highpoints, and a glassy sharpness persisting around the legends. Particularly on the reverse, however, there is ample evidence that some sort of failure in the die resulted in the majority of the legend being recut and repunched, a feature that is incredibly blatant in the word DEO. For the coin to have persisted in its fine style at all thus seems relatively remarkable, and certainly testifies to the expertise of the individual who reworked the dies anew.
